My AmeriCorps experience: Promoting literacy

February 20, 2025

By Jacklyn DeClerk, AmeriCorps volunteer coordinator with Reading Partners Tulsa

During the spring semester of my junior year at The University of Tulsa, I decided to volunteer as a tutor with Reading Partners. After my time as a volunteer, I received an email about an opportunity to join as an AmeriCorps member. Since I had truly enjoyed my experience as a tutor, I jumped at the chance to continue contributing to the organization in a more substantial way. Before this, I had worked typical college student jobs in food service and retail, so the opportunity to serve with AmeriCorps was especially exciting to me. It felt meaningful—something that would not only help me develop professionally but also align with my values. Through my service with AmeriCorps, I’ve gained valuable skills in teamwork, time management, and interpersonal communication. In addition to the professional growth, I’ve also made lasting friendships, further enriching my experience.

Reading Partners’ mission resonates deeply with me. As someone pursuing a Master’s in Social Work, I am particularly inspired by their commitment to closing the opportunity gap. I believe literacy is a powerful tool for empowerment, providing the foundation for opportunities throughout life. Reading Partners is unique in how it combines direct, one-on-one support for students with broader promotion for literacy education. I admire the organization’s approach to breaking down barriers and providing underserved communities with the resources and support they need to thrive. The students I work with are incredibly inspiring. Many of them are eager to learn and thrive in the one-on-one environment that Reading Partners offers. It’s truly rewarding to see them grow as lifelong readers, and I am honored to be part of their journey.

After completing my AmeriCorps service, I plan to pursue a Master’s in Social Work and Public Health at The University of Oklahoma. My goal is to continue promoting literacy. If you’re considering a service term with AmeriCorps or any other organization, I highly encourage you to take the leap. Not only will you gain valuable professional skills, but you’ll also experience the moral fulfillment that comes from knowing you’re making a real difference in the lives of others.
